we’ve all done it, got to the evening of a major event and forgotten how to tie the all important bowtie. it’s at this point i usually call for the nearest servant and get them to find my wife. she usually sets me on the road again and before long it’s all squared away.

if however one finds oneself alone and at the mercy of the interwebby then one could do worse than tune in to one of mr pink’s digital outreach messages, they’ll always be there for you and give a good detailed instruction. i have to say though that the fine looking lady giving the instructions should be sporting neckwear as well, the glimpse of her vest could be enough to make some older viewers reach for the sanatogen.

recently a chap moved in under a waterloo bridge close to our abode. at first this was a little unsettling but a few things made me warm to him. over time he added to his little bundle of belongings and built a little shelter out of paving slabs, when these were needed elsewhere he replaced them with a few pieces of wood to create a modesty screen.

i really started to notice what a gent he was when i saw him putting on his carpet slippers as he arrived back at base one evening. obviously it can be hard finding a valet who is willing to take care of one’s clothing when you are residing on the pavement but he seemed quite capable of keeping a crease in his trouser and regularly dried his clothing by laying it out in the sun.

he also took pride in his little patch and was often seen sweeping away the dust and detritus that would gather in the gutter. where the broom came from i have no idea but he wielded it with a flourish.

he has moved on or been moved on now, his area is clear of personality and nothing says that the bridge was ever inhabited. i kind of miss him.

i will soon be accompanying a few close friends to the goodwood revival, a scene so steeped in historical reference that one can’t help but get in the mood. in order to increase my chances of fitting in i took it upon myself to buy a trilby.

the chap in the piture above is clearly a confused individual who can’t decide if he fits in the traditional or the modern. make your mind up man! please please please seek the aid of jermyn street and find yourself a collar!

the good lady and i were a bit stuck for luncheon today having been in the country for the weekend when lo and behold a good sized box arrived from those lovely people at unearthed inviting us to ‘discover unearthed’. needless to say we got stuck in to the meat assortment post haste but have reserved the chili-stuffed olives to serve as a sharpener for a dinner party at a later date.

i did invent a new crudité though - simply hollow out a good chunk of concombre and cram an olive in it. howzat for a tasty morsel for a fellow on the rise!!

i like getting my shoes shined. sadly in london it is a rare treat unless one is travelling through my favoured departure point of city airport. i once almost missed my flight as i sat having the brogues buffed up by an amiable russki.

recently i was passing through philadelphia airport on my way back to blighty and i came across a chap by the name of ellis lynch he has been shining shoes there since 1964 and knows a thing or two about getting the old faithfuls up to scratch in a jiffy, in this case they are a joseph cheaney jackie r with a charming background of the carpet in philadelphia airport’s terminal a.

he is a charming man and has a tall tale or two for eveybody that passes by. should you ever have the good fortune to come across him then sit down and say hello, ask him about his guitar playing and why his wife sometimes makes him sleep downstairs, unless of course you are wearing the curse of the travelling gent - a flip-flop.

you should have heard of simon carter, but if not never fear - he is one of blighty’s finest craftsmen, designing cufflinks and other gentlemanly sundries and a fine fellow he is as well. probably the only chap i’ve met that knows the correct way to biff a croquet ball without being half-cut. he once told me off for sporting a pair of ‘foreign’ cufflinks while in his shop but i hope that we have moved past that now.

he has now turned his designer’s eye towards the mighty ballpen and a fine implement it is as well. i look forward to writing charming love sonnets or angry letters to the local politicos with it at the earliest opportunity.
